Statement
Stripped-Down
Shelters (S*D*S) are part of an on-going project to consider technologically
intensive yet minimally spatialized shelters. Mechanisms, prefabricated
assembly systems, and transformable componentry are all factors toward
a specific and self-contained architectural entity.

SDS.10
- the Insula - is an all-weather, all-environment dwelling encasement
that is outfitted with a second insulating skin of pneumatic ETFE pillows.
The unit is as continuously molded as possible in order to minimize seams
and maximize weather-tightness. The casing is only articulated by font
door panels, floor panels under the nosing and air-intake foils. In addition,
when the ETFE pillows are deflated the casing becomes unitized and, while
still enclosed, much more transparent. |
