sds.10 - the insula: inflation of pneumatic ETFE pillows for thermal protection |

insula - Stripped-Down Shelter - S*D*S . 10 Jason Vigneri-Beane <jcvb@splitstudio.com> Project Statement Stripped-Down Shelters (S*D*S) are part of an on-going project to consider technologically intensive yet minimally spatialized shelters. Mechanisms, prefabricated assembly systems, and transformable componentry are all factors toward a specific and self-contained architectural entity. SDS.10 : Gross Dimensions = 20'-0" x 14''-6" x 8'-6" (Working Volume = 1,090 cubic feet) / / / Insulation Volume = Deflated: .65 cubic feet; Inflated: 80 cubic feet / / / Insulation Surface Area = Deflated: 308 square feet; 733 square feet / / / ETFE Pillows = 150 / / / Lawn Components = 2 @ 21'-4" x 24'-4" (Gross Dimensions) and 148 square feet of planting surface SDS.10 - the Insula - is an all-weather, all-environment dwelling encasement that is outfitted with a second insulating skin of pneumatic ETFE pillows. The unit is as continuously molded as possible in order to minimize seams and maximize weather-tightness. The casing is only articulated by front door panels, floor panels under the nosing and air-intake foils. In addition, when the ETFE pillows are deflated the casing becomes unitized and, while still enclosed, much more transparent. |
